Frequently asked questions
Getting started
Mwakete is an online marketplace where shops, businesses and individuals in Kiribati list products, services and rentals, and shoppers find them and contact them.
Mwakete does not sell anything itself and never handles the money you pay for what you buy. When you buy, the agreement is between you and the seller.
Anyone 18 or older can use Mwakete, or a younger person with the agreement of a parent or guardian. Anyone can browse; to order, book or message a seller you sign in (free).
Please give real contact details - a seller cannot deliver to a wrong number.
Yes. Individuals can shop on Mwakete, and an individual can open a store to sell what they make or have, offer a service, or rent something out.
Yes. When you open a store you choose your business type: Retailer, or Wholesaler / Distributor. Wholesalers and distributors get extra tools, such as several locations and stock transfers between them.
Yes. Mwakete works on any phone or computer with internet, wherever you are. Each store shows where it is, and which delivery methods it offers - truck, ship, air cargo or Pick & Pay - so you can see whether getting something to you is practical before you order.
Buying on Mwakete
Type what you need in the search box on the home page - a product, a service or a rental. You can also browse by Categories, or open Stores to see every shop.
Cards show where each item is, so you can pick something close to you.
Open the store or product page and use the chat button to message the seller on Mwakete - the chat keeps a record of what you agreed. Many sellers also show buttons to call, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger them.
If you leave Mwakete for WhatsApp or Messenger, that conversation is under that app’s own rules and Mwakete cannot see it.
Yes, and it is a good idea. Message the seller to check the condition, size, stock, price, delivery cost and timing before you order.
Yes, as long as the seller can get it to you. Check which delivery methods the store offers (truck, ship or air cargo) and ask the seller about cost and timing before you order.
Mwakete does not deliver anything. Each seller chooses which delivery methods they offer and what they cost. You choose one of those methods when you order, and the seller arranges it with you.
Yes, if the store offers Pick & Pay - you collect from the store and pay there. Pick & Pay has no delivery charge. Agree a time with the seller before you go.
You pay the seller directly, in whatever way the two of you agree. Mwakete never takes payment for what you buy and never holds that money.
Placing an order is a request to buy, not a completed sale: the seller contacts you to arrange payment and delivery.
While an order is still Pending Payment you can change your contact and delivery details from your account. To cancel, message the seller - they mark the order as cancelled.
Once the seller has moved the order on, any change is up to them.
Message the seller first - most problems are sorted out that way, and the chat on Mwakete keeps a record. Because the sale is between you and the seller, Mwakete cannot issue refunds or recover money.
If a seller is acting dishonestly, tell Mwakete. We will look into it and may act on their store.
Yes, if you are signed in. Reviews must reflect a real experience with the seller. They are public and show the name on your account.
Selling on Mwakete
Open the menu and choose Create Store. Fill in your store details, then add your products, services or rentals with clear photos and prices.
When a customer orders or messages you, it appears in your store dashboard. Reply promptly and arrange payment and delivery with them.
Yes. Anyone who can legally sell what they list can open a store. Choose Retailer as your business type if you sell directly to customers.
You can list products, services and rentals that you actually have and are legally allowed to sell in Kiribati.
Not allowed: anything illegal, weapons, drugs, medicines, stolen or counterfeit goods, and other people’s photos or text used without permission.
Food & Groceries is open to wholesalers and distributors, and to retailers outside South Tarawa.
Use your own clear photos, a plain name customers would search for, the real price, and an honest description of size, condition and what is included. Choose the right category, and set your delivery options and costs so customers know what to expect.
Yes. Sign in to your store and open Products to change a listing’s details, photos or price. Orders already placed keep the price shown when they were made.
Yes. In your store settings, turn on the delivery methods you can genuinely offer - truck, ship, air cargo or Pick & Pay - and set a cost for each, or leave it to be negotiated.
Businesses
Yes. Create a store with your business name, logo and contact details. Customers can find it under Stores, and it has its own page with all your listings.
Yes. Your store dashboard lists all your products, and Inventory lets you track stock, see what is held for open orders, and get low-stock warnings.
Yes. Choose Wholesaler / Distributor as your business type. Mwakete contacts new wholesalers to verify them. Wholesalers and distributors can list Food & Groceries, add several locations and move stock between them.
Yes. Choose Retailer when you create your store. Retailers get the full store, ordering, messaging and stock tools.
Yes. Under Inventory, Import & Sync can read a CSV file from Excel, your till or another system, or link a Google Sheet. You see every change before anything is applied. Direct links to other systems are not available yet.
Delivery & Shipping
If a store offers ship or air cargo, choose it when you order. The seller arranges sending it and tells you the details. Timing depends on schedules between the islands, so agree it with the seller first.
Each store sets its own delivery prices, shown at checkout. Where a store has not set a price, it says delivery is to be negotiated - agree the cost with the seller before you commit. Pick & Pay has no delivery charge.
Delivery times are set by each seller and, between islands, by ship and flight schedules. Ask the seller before you order and agree a time.
Yes, if the store offers Pick & Pay. Choose it at checkout, then agree a time with the seller and pay when you collect.
Open My Account and tap Drive with Mwakete (it shows once driving is open). Fill in your name, phone, Facebook Messenger and email, your vehicle and island. Add ONE ID - your KPF ID, National ID, passport or driver’s licence - with a photo of it, then do the face check: look at the camera and turn your head left and right until the ring is green. Finally sign the 2-page Driver Agreement, in the app or on paper. A Mwakete admin checks your application and tells you on Messenger.
As a driver you are your own boss: you choose your jobs and set your own fee for each one with the seller. Your ID and photos are kept private and deleted 90 days after you stop driving.
Services
Yes. When you add a listing in your store, choose Service. Describe what you do, where you work and how you charge.
Customers can message the provider on Mwakete, use their call or WhatsApp buttons if shown, or send a booking request with the dates they want. A booking is a request until the provider confirms it.
Rentals
Yes. When you add a listing in your store, choose Rental. Customers can then request the dates they want.
Include the price and what period it covers (per day, week or month), where it is, clear photos, what is included, any deposit you ask for, and your rules - so customers can decide before they request dates.
Open the rental and request your dates. The request is pending until the owner confirms it - pending is not booked. Mwakete will not let you request dates that clash with a booking the owner has already confirmed.
You can change your request while it is pending. Agree payment, deposit and handover with the owner directly.
Safety & Trust
Message sellers through Mwakete so there is a record. Check the item and price before you pay, meet in a public place for pickups, and be careful with anyone who pushes you to pay quickly or off the usual route.
Store badges: Not yet checked means Mwakete has not yet phoned, emailed and visited the store - take extra care. New means Mwakete has done those checks. Verified means a checked store that customers rate well, or one Mwakete verified itself. Checked stores are listed first. No badge is a promise about any particular sale.
Stop before sending money or personal details. Do not click links sent by someone you do not know. Then email Mwakete with the store name and what happened - we will look into it and may hide the listing or close the store.
Email Mwakete with the store name, the listing and what worries you. We will look into it and may hide the listing or close the store. We cannot recover money paid to a seller.
Never. Mwakete will never ask for your bank PIN, your password or the code we email you to sign in. Anyone who asks for them is trying to get into your account or your money.
Be careful if someone asks you to pay before you have agreed the details, pushes you to hurry, asks for payment to a different person or account than before, sends a link to pay, or asks for more than the price shown. Check with the seller through Mwakete chat before paying.
Account & Security
To look around, no - guests can browse every store and product. To place an order, send a booking request, message a seller or leave a review, you sign in (free, with Google or an email code). Your cart is kept while you sign in. Your account also keeps your orders and chats in one place.
To sell, you need a store account.
Never share the sign-in code we email you. On a shared phone, log out when you finish. Sellers can turn on two-step sign-in (2FA) in store Settings.
Shoppers sign in with a code sent to their email, or with Google - request a new code if the old one expired. Sellers can use “Forgot password” on the store sign-in page.
Still stuck, or think someone else got in? Email Mwakete from the address on your account.
When you order, that seller sees your name, phone, island and village and what you ordered - nothing from other stores. Mwakete does not sell your information or share it for advertising, and does not run advertising or tracking tools. The Privacy Policy explains everything, including how to have your data deleted.
